The origins of the Christmas tree vary from place to place. USDA Historical Experts, Ann Effland, says one story goes back to the early 700’s in Germany when the Pagan Druid tribes believed trees had spirits and would decorate oak trees:

The first record of one being on display in this Country was in the 1830’s by the German settler of Pennsylvania; but, history shows that Europeans used small four feet high trees, while Americans, liking things bigger and better, wanted Christmas trees to reach from floor to ceiling.
