Today is the shortest day of the year in terms of sunlight, the Winter Solstice. At 9:59 this morning the sun’s rays were shining directly on the tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere, making today the first official day of Winter.
Of course, we’re still waiting for actual Winter conditions to get to the area. This has been one of the warmest Decembers so far in history. Through the 19th, this December is the 6th warmest. We’ve even seen 70’s this month, going back to last Wednesday and another day in early December. The last time we had two days at 70 plus degree weather in December, was in 1956. According to Fox 4 TV Meteorologists, we may find some more winter-like cold as we move into 2022. Cold air, that has been locked up in Canada for most of this month, may be moving down into the United States for the last few days of December and into early January.
So, don’t be too surprised if we see some colder shots of air next week. When is it going to snow? Hard to say; but, meteorologists say with bigger temperature changes coming, that usually means precipitation comes with it.
