A total of 10 city residents submitted letters of interest for the vacant seat on the Garnett City Commission by last Friday’s deadline, that’s more than any appointment dating back almost 40 years. As the application process comes to an end, Mayor Jody Cole says they would be going through the interview process this week in hopes of having the new candidate seated by the first meeting in January. Cole says they will select a few to interview. She says interviews would be scheduled according to candidates’ availability during the holidays.
According to the Anderson County Review, the number of submitted applicants is the largest number of possible replacements among vacancy appointments that have been made in Garnett since the mid 1980’s, according to their newspaper archives and information from longtime city employees. In recent years, appointments have drawn far more interest among city residents than actual campaigns for election to one of those city posts, one of the three of which occurs each year.
