Governor Laura Kelly has announced she and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate have drafted a Bill to eliminate the State Food Sales Tax in the State. Kelly says getting rid of the tax would benefit every Kansas family, saving them up to $500 a year. In November, she announced the “Ax the Food Tax’ Campaign, which received widespread bipartisan support. Kansas is one of only seven states in the Nation that fully taxes groceries. Kansas’ food sales tax rate is 6.5%, the second highest rate in the Country.

The Governor says the Bill is possible thanks to her administrations commitment to fiscally responsible budget practices over the past three years, causing Kansas revenues to come in ahead of estimates, every month for over a year. She says Kansas is able to deliver this tax cut while still fully funding schools, fixing roads and bridges, expanding access to high speed internet and investing in other core service.
