Fire crews have cleared the scene of an early morning fire at an apartment building in the ten hundred block of Willow, commonly known as The Chicken Coops and that fire is now being investigated as a fatality. Crews arrived on scene about 3:30 this morning and found a working fire on the east end of the building. According to eyewitnesses, police and fire crews went door to door to the other apartments, banging and shouting for residents to get out of the building. Fire crews went on the offensive and quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to two units. According to Ottawa Police Chief Adam Weingartner, upon entering the building, a subject was located, deceased, inside an apartment. Units with the Ottawa Police Department, Ottawa Fire Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s office and Kansas State Fire Marshall’s office are on scene and investigating the circumstances.
