The City of Garnett and the Kansas Department of Transportation have been working on a City Connecting Link Improvement Project for U. S. Highway 59, part of Maple Street. This project is going to include many improvements, including pavement restoration, pavement patching with areas of full-depth replacement, storm water drainage, curb and gutter, sidewalk ramps and pavement markings.

The scope of this project will be from Fourth Avenue west to KS Highway 31 and Park Road intersection on U.S. 59. Costs for this project are not yet finalized; however, the current estimate for this project is just short of $2 million with the agreement that KDOT will pay for 75% up to $1,000,000. The City’s share will be 25% or any costs over $1 million. During the same time, the City will be making improvements to the storm drain system on the highway, near First Avenue and Redbud Street. The increased capacity should help alleviate the stormwater drainage issues that have plagued this area for years.
