During her State of the State Address last night, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly touched on a variety of topics ranging from COVID 19 and the State’s economy. She challenged Republicans, who control the State Legislature, to freeze tuition at the State’s public colleges and give her a bill that ends the sales tax on groceries by the end of this month. She urged lawmakers to take action to expand recent executive orders she established as COVID 19 surged in the State, due to the omicron variant:

Kelly says eliminating the sales tax on food would save Kansans hundreds of dollars a year.

Kelly also called for a one time income tax rebate for $250 for single filers and $500 for married couples, more state spending on mental health services, Medicaid expansion, the end of transfers from KDOT to the General Fund and for a tuition freeze at universities, as well as more money for law enforcement and raises for members of the Kansas Highway Patrol
