A few weeks ago, a medical milestone was achieved when a pig’s heart was transplanted into a human in Maryland. This was preceded by decades of research and genetic modification. Dr. Joan Lunney is a USDA Scientist working on pig genetics. She explains the process:
Lunney says the likelihood of the man living a long time is hopefully, good, but likely less, because they have to adjust drugs that are appropriate for zeno-transplantation, that would be from one species to another. The genetic modification is being used to breed pigs resistant to pig diseases that cost producers millions of dollars.
