The City of Osawatomie is thinking big and toward the future. They have announced they are partnering with Evergy to explore building up to 3 megawatts of solar to power the Community. Osawatomie Deputy City Manger, Bret Glendening, says he is excited to work with Evergy on the project and diversify their Municipal Electric Utilities Generation Portfolio even further. It will be built within the City limits of Osawatomie.
Evergy and the city will conduct a Viability Study before proceeding to build the solar array and entering into a Purchase Power Agreement for the energy. Evergy Energy Partners would construct, own and maintain the solar facility.
Evergy has a strong commitment to renewable energy for a sustainable future. Currently, Evergy meets about 50% of its customers needs with carbon free energy, including about a third from renewable sources. Osawatomie can generate its own electricity, but by diversifying, they hope to be able to avoid the poser disruptions and huge price increases that plagued the area during the extreme cold event last year. The solar array would be build on city owned ground near the Osawatomie State Hospital
