A very nice double honor for a Wellsville High School student. Her artwork has received a Gold and Silver Key from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Wellsville senior Kathryn Thompson actually created the art last year and submitted it, with the help of Art Teacher Rip Harrison. She says both pieces were inspired by music. The Gold Key Winner is of R & B singer, Pip Millett and the Silver Key winner is rapper Joey Bada$$.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the Country’s longest running and most prestigious recognition program for seventh through twelfth grade students, involved in the Creative Arts. According to the Scholastic Awards, jurors judge works based on three core values: originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Thompson’s submissions checked all three boxes.
Thompson is studying abroad for her senior year, spending the first semester in Denmark and this semester in a boarding school in London. Her mother will receive the awards in Wichita next month. Her work and the work of other winners in the Eastern Kansas Region, will be on display at the Mark Arts Youth Gallery from February 18 to March 26th.
Thompson will be studying Sociology at Texas State University’s Honors College next Fall, but she says she’ll be sure to carve out time to create art while she’s there.
