An apartment fire in Garnett yesterday afternoon has left at least four people displaced and tow injured. Garnett Fire received the call of a structure fire at the corner of 5th and Walnut. When they arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two story apartment building. They quickly went to work on the blaze. Two people were in the building when the fire started: Twenty five year old Bailey Weide and her two year old son, Brighton, were able to get out of the building. They were transported to Anderson County Hospital, Bailey with burns on her head and face, her son for smoke inhalation. No word on their condition this morning.
The fire continued to burn late into the evening and once extinguished the roof had collapsed and the building and its contents estimated at a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross has stepped in to help the family with immediate needs; however, the young mother and her son are in need of donations, as they lost everything. Donations are being accepted by family members and KOFO will also be accepting donations for Bailey, her boyfriend who also lived in the building and their son. Bailey wears size 7-8 shoes, large shirts and size 14-16 jeans. Her boyfriend Mike–extra large shirts, 3-34 jeans, and size 11 shoes. Brighton wears size 8 in kids shoes and 3T or 4T clothes. One other man lived in the building and also lost everything. We are unsure at this time of his needs. You can find a complete list of item needed on KOFO’s Facebook page. Please feel free to bring any donations to the station and we will get them to those in need.
