We have more information on the fire that destroyed an apartment building in Garnett.
Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were speaking with 25 year old Bailey Weide at 5th and Walnut when they noticed fire coming through the residence. She stated that her two year old child was asleep in the home. Members of the Garnett Police Department responded and, with the help of the Lawrence officer and Weide, entered the residence numerous times while it was consumed with heavy smoke and fire, in an attempt to rescue the child, who could be heard screaming inside. Bailey was finally able to go through a side door and get the child out of the house. She and the child were taken to Anderson County Hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Several officers at the scene declined medical attention; however, two were treated on scene for smoke inhalation and singed hair suffered during the rescue attempts.
Fire units from Garnett, Welda, Colony and Harris assisted at the fire. This is the third significant structure fire in Garnett since the beginning of the year. The building is a total loss and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
