Are you sick of all the scams going around right now? So is Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who says impersonation scams are the target of Kansas and many other states, who have asked the Federal Trade Commission to create a robust rule, outlawing impersonal scams. These can involve those pretending to be a government agency, asking for money, a business, and person to person deceptions such as grandparents scams, romance scams and others saying money is needed urgently to get someone out of trouble, or to get them by, usually with the promise to repay or developing an online romance that leads to one person asking for money. At the moment, there is no specific National rule outlawing these fraudulent acts. Schmidt says he gets hundreds of call every year from people reporting being the victim of a scam.
The Attorney Generals asked the FTC to publish additional consumer and business education materials to help prevent consumers from becoming victims of impersonation fraud.
If you have been a victim of such a scam, you can file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office and receive information on how to protect yourself from the scams, .
