Senator Jerry Moran, Co-Chair of the Senate Hunger Caucus, urged United States Department of Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack to prioritize using U. S. Agricultural Export Assistance and International Food Aid Programs to help supply markets left unfulfilled as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Moran says as both the immediate and long term effects on Ukraine’s agriculture sector become clearer, the United States should work quickly to provide the necessary commodities, through sale or donation, to meet the countries unsatisfied food and commodity needs. He says between the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Afghanistan and the developing crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine, it is critical to utilize every tool at our disposal to meet these challenges. Moran also continued his call for Secretary Vilsak to utilize the Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust to purchase U. S. Commodities to donate to food emergency situations.
