Garnett Police Chief, Kurt King, is asking property owners to install outdoor security cameras, in wake of a rash of recent incidents in Garnett. Three vehicle thefts were reported from late February to early March in the city. They were taken while unattended, with two of them occurring at night. The vehicles were taken from 506 North Maple, 518 East 5th Avenue and 118 West Fourth Avenue. One of those vehicles, a four-wheeler, was recovered in Ottawa last week.
Chief King says basic security measures should never be ignored, even with property located in what might be considered fairly high traffic areas. He recommends people keep things out of plain view of the public and most importantly, keep the keys out of your vehicles and locked at all times. He also encourages people to have home surveillance cameras put up.
Interestingly, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation most recent State Crime Report, shows the lowest number of property crimes since 1973. However, higher gas prices and other inflationary pressure in the current economy, may have an impact, as criminals attempt to handle that extra expense by committing additional crimes, particularly stealing gasoline from vehicles.
