An Osawatomie firefighter died early Monday morning following a single-vehicle crash Sunday, according to the Osawatomie Fire Department. Firefighter Josh Coffelt was not on duty at the time of the fatal crash. The collision took place near East 335th Street and Crescent Hill Road in Miami County. Osawatomie Fire Chief, Brian Love, says the call came in just after 10:00 Sunday morning. He says responding firefighters recognized Coffelts car and it made things very difficult; but is proud of their professionalism as they worked the scene. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office reports the car let the road and hit a tree.
Love says Coffelt attended Osawatomie High School with some of the other firefighters, which allowed him to fit right in when he joined the department two years ago. He was dedicated and moved quickly through his training before officially joining the department. Coffelt also worked as a mechanic at K & T Auto. A social media post says he had a heart like no other and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
