Thirty one years ago, Wayne Minckley was hired as a jailer for the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, After nine months accepted an offer to become a Road Patrol Officer. Thirty one years later, he is set to retire tomorrow, as Undersheriff for Miami County. Through the years, he has made his way up through the ranks.

Wayne attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson in 1993 and he was transferred to the Detective Division in 1995. After being promoted to Administrative Sergeant, he kept a close watch on his superiors as he learned about leadership and how to act as a supervisor. Minckley says Undersheriff at the time, Mark Schmidt, was an influential role model. When Schmidt retired in 2011, he was prepared to step into the Undersheriff role. He says he tried to mirror Schmidt’s management style, while also utilizing advice he had received from colleagues in the industry through the years. Minckley officially retires tomorrow.

The public is invited to a Retirement Reception for Wayne, scheduled tomorrow from 10:00 to 3:00 at Town Square in Paola.
