Oil production workers and related businesses in Anderson County are probably not complaining about the cost of gasoline. While gas prices were much lower last year, to the delight of drivers, those times were tough on oil producers and workers who struggled to make money.
For a short time, just a year ago in April, the market price of crude oil was actually negative — producers having to pay companies just to take it off their hands. Now, due to a number of factors including the improving economy and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, oil was selling at a high of around $130 earlier in March, driving gas to near $4.00 a gallon.
According to the Anderson County Review, there are 24 workers living in Anderson County actively making their living in the oil industry, 55 in Allen County, 27 in Franklin, 34 in Miami. Anderson County produced 236,000 barrels of oil in 1997, more than 251,000 in 2013. Following declining prices as U. S. oil production surged, production dropped in Anderson County to just 102,000 barrels in 2021.
