The Kansas Legislature convened for Veto Session yesterday morning, with many important Bills still up for debate. One of those is House Bill 2487, which aims to eliminate the State Food Sales Tax. Yesterday House Democrat, Jim Gartner, made a motion to bring the Bill to a vote. That vote may come today. Governor Kelly wants the tax completely eliminated by July first, but both House and Senate Republicans say a compromise may be the solution. Senator Caryn Tyson, on that proposal:
Only 13 states tax groceries, Kansas has the second highest tax of those states. Kelly says the average Kansan could save up to $500 a year by eliminating the tax. Lawmakers say Kansas will lose over $500 million a year in tax revenue once the tax is completely eliminated.
