They probably weren’t expecting a history lesson at the latest Ottawa Planning Commission Study Session, but they got one anyway, even if it was very brief. The Commission has been wrestling with what may be an archaic issue… Mixed Use Zoning has a minimum requirement of three acres… and the rule has caused a delay in a developer’s plan to turn the Econo-Lodge into an apartment complex. The motel is around two acres. During discussion of the issue, Diana Staresinic-Dean gave a brief history of Mixed Use Zoning:

The Planning Commission is expected to accept a Text Amendment at its May 11th meeting, allowing the Econo-Lodge project to move forward.
