The street rehabilitation project in Osawatomie has begun. One of the first, Brown Avenue between 16th and 18th, will undergo full reconstruction as part of the asphalt street project this Summer. The contract was awarded to Killough Construction, out of Ottawa, for just over $730,000. The bid was under engineer estimates by more than $100,000.
Deputy City Manager, Bret Glendening went through options for concrete and asphalt. He says the street will be a full deck removal and reconstruction of the street, not just and overlay. He told council members he prefers asphalt over concrete. He noted the $77,000 price difference between Killough’s asphalt and concrete bids would be enough of a savings to cover most of the maintenance costs during the asphalt street’s lifespan, estimated to be 40 years. He estimated the project would begin in early July, depending on weather. The contractor has a late start date in September. Regardless of when the project begins, in that several month window, the asphalt price in Killough’s bid was locked in at the amount council members were considering. The vote to approve the asphalt contract with Killough was unanimous.
