If you are planning on heading to the lake this weekend, be aware of blue-green algae. There are already alerts for the nasty stuff! The only lake with any type of alert in this area is Garnett North Lake in Anderson County, which is under a watch, and Lake Shawnee in Topeka, with a warning.
A harmful algae bloom may look like foam, scum, or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Common symptoms, if you come in contact, include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water.
Have fun at the lake, but be aware of your surroundings and keep yourself, your kids and your pets, out of any area that may look like an algae bloom is starting.
