It’s going to be a beautiful weekend. Temperatures are heating up and may people are planning on heading to the lake for a little R & R. You need to be aware of blue green algae. There are already alerts for the nasty stuff. The only lake with any type of alert in this area is Garnett North Lake in Anderson County, which is under a watch and Lake Shawnee in Topeka with a warning.
A harmful algae bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water with color of blue, bright green, brown or red. Common symptoms if you come in contact include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water.
Have fun at the lake, but be aware of your surroundings and keep yourself, your kids and your pets out of any area that may look like an algae bloom is starting. You can find a complete list of lakes in Kansas with blue green algae alerts on the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Facebook page and website.
