What a great weekend to go to the lake, right? Sweltering hot… man that water is going to feel great! Wait… several area lakes have been placed under a blue-green algae warning or watch. That includes Pomona Lake, where a lot of local people go. Also, Milford Lake has been placed under a hazard warning. Under watches, Crystal in Anderson County, Carbondale City Lake in Osage County, Melvern Outlet River Pond in Osage County and Louisburg City Lake. It’s very important to avoid water that is bright green or has scum or a paint-like surface or floating blue-green clumps. Pets or livestock that swim in, drink the water, or eat dried algae may become seriously ill or die.
Officials are asking the public to avoid contact with the water. They say if you are fishing, the fish need to be rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion consumed. If you are in contact with the water, wash off as soon as possible and keep your eyes on pets, keeping them away from the water.
