Anderson County property owners who saw large increases in their assessed property valuations this year, will pay over a million in new taxes for the County Budget in 2023, which county officials say is necessary in order to maintain county services. A Public Budget Hearing will be held August 29th at 10:00 in the morning at the Anderson County Community Building, to allow public comment on the spending plan. The Draft Budget plan is to increase spending from $14.4 million to $15.2 million next year. When projected onto the tax rates, the mill levy drops to 78.174, down nearly 6 mills over last year, while taking into consideration a 20% overall increase in the county’s assessed property valuation, to a record $126.2 million for 2023.
Kansas Revenue Neutral Law, passed in March 2021, requires local governments to give specific notice to property owners and hold a public hearing if the amount they’ll raise in tax dollars, exceeds the prior year. Anderson County Clerk, Julie Wettstein, says the notices should be arriving in mailboxes very soon.
