Pomona – Jewel Janet Humiston, 83, passed away peacefully and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at her home near Pomona, Kansas. She was born on July 27, 1941, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of Clarence and Sarah Pauline (Clarke) Gunter.
Janet was raised by her grandparents in Arkansas until she moved to Lawrence Kansas with her mother and was then raised by her aunt Madeline “Tootsie” (Clarke) Mzhickteno. She had lived in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1959. She had lived many years in Ottawa and moved to South of Pomona in 1976.
While in high school, Janet was set up on a blind date with Gayle Humiston. This stuck well, because on December 24, 1959, Janet and Gayle were united in marriage in Ottawa. To this union three sons were born, Paul, Eric and Erin.
Janet was a homemaker, worked for the Pomona School District in the kitchen and mentored many “young’uns” as she called them. She also operated Janet’s Green Stuff greenhouse south of Pomona. Throughout all of this time, Janet and Gayle fostered over 50 children and of those, they adopted Diana, Jessica and Jeffrey. Janet taught Sunday School and was not shy about her love for Jesus and would not let anyone leave hungry.
Janet is survived by her husband, Gayle of nearly 65 years; her children, Erin, Eric, Diana, Jessica and Jeffrey; by her six grandchildren, Heather, Joshua, Ian, Benjamin, Cameron and Krysten; and nine great-grandchildren, Karson, Wynter, Mila, Miles, Whiley, Sawyer, Willow, Keeley and Mariah.
Janet was preceded in death by her son Paul, who was stillborn in 1962, and by her grandson, Andrew.
Janet will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
