WASHINGTON — A 13-year-old girl from Overbrook begins the opening rounds of the National Spelling Bee today in Washington. Meredith Foulke is one of three Kansas kids competing in the spelling bee. She won the Osage County spelling bee and a regional spelling bee held in Topeka. This afternoon’s round will be a written test of 50 words. Then spellers will be asked to spell words Wednesday. The top 40 to 50 spellers will appear on the actual spell-down which will be televised on ESPN. Meredith said her first goal is to get far enough to be on ESPN.
