WASHINGTON — The 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway in Washington. A record 293 spellers, including one from China are taking part in the 82nd annual spelling competition.Thirteen-year-old Meredith Foulke of Overbrook survived the first preliminary oral spelling round this morning by correctly spelling “indebted” and will receive a second preliminary word this afternoon. Based on scores from today’s preliminary rounds, the top 40 to 50 spellers will begin the semi-final round Thursday morning. Meredith was the Osage County spelling winner and a Topeka regional winner. She is a student at the Overbrook Attendance Center.
