GARNETT — Garnett city commissioners recently granted Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks agents permission to drive ATVs on city streets. Wildlife and park agents use ATVs to patrol the Prairie Spirit Trail but need to detour on Park Road in Garnett because a trail bridge over the Pottawatomie Creek was washed out during the 2007 flood. The bridge is being rebuilt. However, a few months ago, city commissioners banned ATVs and other alternative vehicles from city streets. Although commissioners were originally skeptical of request but they finally said the state ATVs are needed for safety and law enforcement reasons and they’ll allow the officers to use ATVs on Park Road while they’re detouring. The exception will continue until this fall, when the Pottawatomie bridge project is completed and officers can stay on the Prairie Spirit Trail all the way through.
