OTTAWA — Because of the recession there’s a new type of customer going to Wal-Mart. And ABC’s Alex Stone reports Wal-Mart is going to great lengths to keep them shopping there. With the goal of keeping customers who have higher incomes, Wal-Mart is redesigning hundreds of stores to give them wider aisles, better lighting, more brand names, and improving its electronics department. In this poor economy Wal-Mart says it’s seeing more customers who are better off but are looking for bargains. Those shoppers spend on average 40 percent more than traditional lower-income Wal-Mart shoppers and the company wants to keep the higher-end customers.
