OTTAWA — Kansas’ new agricultural secretary Josh Svaty urges you to buy local food from local farmers markets. It’s part of the state’s effort to recognize August as Kansas Farmers Market Month. Ottawa farmers market manager Freone Hollinger said Kansas is behind Nebraska in promoting farmers markets. She was in Omaha recently to check out Nebraska’s efforts. That state is promoting “slow food” in which families sit down together and eat and talk together over the dinner table. There’s strong interest among Kansas communities for starting new farmers markets, she said. It’s the peak time to buy food from the Ottawa farmers market because of the flood of produce that’s coming in, she said. The Ottawa farmers market is Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning at the east side of the Orscheln’s parking lot.
