OTTAWA — A flood warning continues for the area this morning. The National Weather Service office at Topeka said that includes the Marais des Cygnes River near Quenemo, affecting Franklin and Osage counties; and above Reading, affecting Lyon and Osage counties; and Pottawatomie Creek near Scipio, affecting Anderson and Franklin counties. The Marais des Cygnes flood warning at Quenemo was expected to stay in effect until Friday morning. Late Wednesday night, the river was slightly above 26 feet or nine feet above flood stage. The weather service said the river will probably fall below flood stage later this afternoon. The flood warning for Pottawatomie Creek near Scipio was extended until Thursday evening. Early this morning the creek reached nearly 26 feet, or about three feet above flood stage, resulting in moderate flooding to farmers’ fields. The weather service said the creek will fall to below flood stage late this morning. The weather service office reminded motorists not to drive into flooded areas. Shallow-flowing water can wash a car from the roadway and the roadbed could be
washed out under the water.
