OTTAWA — Allegre Pharmacy of Ottawa is now a state cultural phenomenon. Ordering a soda fountain treat was elected as one of Eight Cultural Wonders of Kansas. The Ottawa soda fountain is one of 38 operating soda fountains left in Kansas. The Prairie Spirit Trail was on a list of semi-finalists but wasn’t chosen. Bill Allegre said his fountain has been in operation for 108 years. When he bought the pharmacy, he decided to keep the fountain going and he said he hasn’t regretted it. “I don’t have to brown bag,” he said.
