OTTAWA — The Lake Region Resource Conservation and Development Council has received the 2009 Group Civil Rights Achievement Award from the Kansas Natural Resources Conservation Service. Lake Region chairman Don Stottlemire said the council won for its Adopt-A-Bike program that gives rebuilt bicycles to children and adults in the six-county region through ECKAN. Rather than see landfills filled with bicycles, they are taken to the Ellsworth Correctional Facility where they are rebuilt, he said. The program has saved 4,000 bicycles and more than 1,500 have been given to children and adults in the six counties of the Lake Region.
