GARNETT — The Anderson County ECKAN office is expecting more individuals and families to need help this year. David Shrum told the Anderson County Review he’s gotten almost as many applications this year as last year and there is still more time to go until Christmas ECKAN and the Garnett Optimist Club have formed a holiday effort called “The Spirit of Christmas.” Through the Spirit of Christmas program, individuals and families can be adopted by others and receive holiday assistance for food and toys. ECKAN also has an Angel Tree at ALCO where individuals or groups can buy a gift an adult or child from the tree who has listed their Christmas wishes. He said nearly 130 applications have been received in the office for Spirit of Christmas assistance, and out of those applicants, only 23 have been adopted. He said volunteers are also needed to help deliver packages and meals on Dec. 18 and 19. Call the Garnett ECKAN office at (785) 448-3670 or stop by the office downtown.
