TOPEKA — The Democrats’ leading candidate for Kansas governor dropped out of the race Wednesday. Olathe businessman Tom Wiggans said it would take too much money and effort to challenge Republican candidate for governor U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback. Wiggans’ decision is two weeks after a federal securities fraud lawsuit in California against him, a drug company he once led and other company executives. He said the lawsuit had no bearing on his decision to leave the race. The decision leaves Herbert West of Paola as the only declared Democratic candidate. The Kansas Democratic Party says it doesn’t want West to run.
