TOPEKA–Here’s another scam to be aware of. The Kansas Attorney General is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers. Apparently consumers are told they owe a debt related to an internet payday loan…and the consumer says they never had such a loan or paid it off years ago. The caller threatens the consumer with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer wires money via western union. Complaints should be reported to the A-G’s office at 1-800-432-2310.
