GARNETT — This is the last month for Anderson County residents to drop off unwanted electronic items at the county landfill for free. A grant to the landfill to provide the free service pickups for e-waste expires at the end of the month. Anderson County engineer Donna Schmit told the Anderson County Review that the county matches the grant with landfill employees’ labor. Electronic waste is pretty much anything that can be plugged in, including computers, microwaves, televisions, hair dryers, telephones and other electronic items. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said because of certain heavy metals, e-waste is considered as hazardous material and can leach lead into the water and soil. Once the grant expires, the county will accept e-waste but will charge for it.
