At approximately at 10 p.m. Friday night, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Samuel Smith was responding to a domestic disturbance call in Franklin County near the city of Pomona.  While en route to the call heading northbound on California Road, Deputy Smith lost control of his patrol vehicle and struck a tree head on, causing the vehicle to catch on fire.  Deputy Smith lost his life in the crash.  Troopers of the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating the accident.  Deputy Smith was hired by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 17, 2009 ,and graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center this spring.   Deputy Smith was 22.  He was respected by his peers and will be missed, Sheriff Jeff Curry said.  Posted 07/24/10 07:50am
