OTTAWA – It’s anchors aweigh for the East Kansas Navy Association. Several area former sailors are holding an organizational dinner for the group and a birthday party for the U.S. Navy Saturday night at 7 at the Ottawa Sirloin Stockade. If you have any association with the Navy, you’re welcome, said East Kansas Navy chair Kenny Nichols, a former Navy medical corpsman. You pay for your own meal though. The group is designed to support sailors and their families and help those who are in the Navy or plan on joining, he said. The group may also try to affiliate with the national Navy League.
Nichols said a surprising of sailors on the bounding main are bound to come from the land of the seas of grass. When he joined the Navy, half of those young men who joined the military from Newton, his hometown, joined the Navy. He confessed that he was anxious to leave land-locked Kansas but was glad to return when he left the Navy. For information, call Nichols at (785) 242-4940.
