K-state Research and Extension horticulturist Ward Upham said the first step is avoiding pumpkins that are discolored or have spots. To ensure you have a pumpkin that is property matured, stick a fingernail in the orange rind. The rind shouldn’t be soft and should have a fair amount of resistance, he said.
