GARNETT — The Garnett debate of fish tours versus fishing for tourism could make another splash. The Anderson County Review reported that the Garnett City Commission has a received a request to close Cedar Valley Reservoir one weekend in June for a national boat racing meet. City commissioners say they have reservations before they guarantee the reservation. Earlier this year, Garnett-area anglers criticized the city for allowing too many events at Lake Garnett, a favorite of boaters, event organizers and fishermen. This time, the race would require the closing of the Cedar Valley Reservoir, the city’s large lake southwest of Garnett. Race organizers say unless the city could guarantee $5,000 in sponsorships for the races, visitors would have to pay admission even if they weren’t going to see the races. The event would impact a special state fisheries program which has a limit on how many times the city can close its lakes to fishing each year. However, race organizers say the event would bring lots of people to Garnett for motel stays and restaurant visits to cover the inconvenience. City officials said they’d like to hear from the public about the proposal before they decide.
