SALINA — About 170 Kansas National Guard soldiers are scheduled to return from Afghanistan Thursday afternoon, just in time for Christmas. Most of the soldiers are from an engineering unit based in Augusta but include some from the Guard unit at Iola and former unit at Garnett, which was transferred to Iola. The soldiers spent a year in Afghanistan building, repairing and maintaining base camps and facilities for other units deployed to that nation.
