LAWRENCE–With a new census, comes redistricting, and U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins doesn’t like it. During a Kiwanis luncheon meeting Thursday at the Lawrence Country Club, Jenkins was mum on the subject. The state’s four Congressional districts each need to have at least 700,000 residents. The 1st district would have to expand east because of decreased population. The third would have to grow smaller because of population growth in Johnson, Wyandotte, Douglas, and Franklin counties. Jenkins’ district includes Kansas University’s West Campus, as well as Washburn Kansas State, Pittsburg State, Baker and Ottawa universities. She would like her district to remain the same. But Lawrence Mayor Mike Amyx would like the city to be in one district, instead of its current situation being in two. But Amyx did not say whether he would like Lawrence to be in Jenkins’ district or move into Representative-elect Kevin Yoder’s district.
