KANSAS CITY — The groups that collect blood for regional hospitals report dangerously low blood supplies. The Community Blood Center and the American Red Cross say that because of the winter storm, they’ve had to cancel most of their blood drives for two days this week. They say the blood stocks were already low of the slowdown in blood drives because of the holidays. The Community Blood Center’s David Graham said his group must collect at least 580 units of blood each day to supply 70 area hospitals in Kansas and Missouri and the shelves are becoming bare. The Red Cross said it has lost 250 pints of blood because of the cancellations. The Community Blood Center asks donors to visit one of its donation centers. You can get a list of those centers at the web site at www.savealifenow.org. The closest centers are at Olathe, Overland Park and Topeka. The Red Cross also asks donors to head for one of its donation centers. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
