OTTAWA — The surviving victim of a brutal home invasion 11 years ago has died. Howard Johnson, 96, died Sunday at Ransom Memorial Hospital. He was severely injured and his wife of 55 years, Vivian Johnson, was killed when two men broke into their farm home near Ottawa 11 years ago. Joseph Hayden and Raymond Fuller were convicted of several charges in the incident in which the Johnsons were beaten with a shovel. Johnson survived but his wife died 18 days after the attack. Both Hayden and Fuller are serving long prison terms. Hayden was retried and convicted the second time after the Kansas Supreme Court ordered a new trial because of what the justices called prejudicial conduct by the judge. Dengel and Son Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements. The funeral and burial will be at Lindsborg, where Johnson was born and grew up.
