TOPEKA — Attorney General Derek Schmidt said he’s requesting that Kansas be allowed to join a lawsuit by Florida and 19 other states challenging the constitutionality of the federal Affordable Health Care Act. Schmidt said joining the lawsuit is one of his first official acts as attorney general. The law is an unprecedented power grab by the federal government, he said. Critics of the lawsuits call it political grandstanding. One judge has ruled that the individual mandate provision of the health care law is unconstitutional. Two other judges have ruled that the individual mandate provision of the health care law is constitutional.
