GARNETT–During the Garnett City Commission Meeting last week, the “First Impressions” group was impressed with the city of Garnett. The group is part of a program by the Southeast Kansas Regional Leadership Academy. Five volunteers traveled to Garnett to see how the community appears to a newcomer. The volunteers visited local restaurants and businesses and asked questions. The group said that the people were friendly and helpful. What the volunteers were most impressed with was that the size of the city provided recreational amenities such as a park,  lake, shooting range, and recreation center. What was a drawback? Finding the place. The volunteers said that poor signs directing people to Garnett is the problem. Also directions to local attractions are difficult to read. The group said if the community builds large-printed signs throughout town and on U.S. Highway 169, people would stop by.
