BEIJING — At the White Cloud Temple in Beijing today, people gathered to throw coins at the temple’s bell for good fortune. It’s long time tradition for the lunar new year, which is today and being celebrated in China, most of East Asia and in Chinatowns throughout the U.S. It is the Year of the Rabbit. That is unless you’re in Vietnam, where it’s the Year of the Cat. The Chinese zodiac assigns different characteristics to each of the animals celebrated in the 12-year lunar cycle. As far as the rabbit’s characteristics, think of Warner Brother’s Bugs Bunny.
