TOPEKA–The month of February is American Heart Month. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment encourages all Kansas residents to adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States and Kansas. Heart disease can be prevented by getting regular health screenings by your health care provider, be physically active for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week, don’t smoke, eat a rich diet in whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits and vegetables, and limit foods that are high in sodium, cholesterol, sugar and fats. For more information on heart disease, contact the Kansas Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention.
